OpenDNS? Google DNS? Comcast? Surprising Results.

OpenDNS? Google DNS? Comcast? Surprising Results.

By Zoli Erdos on May 15, 2010

I’ve been a long time OpenDNS user (hardcoded in my router), but after installing a new router, I decided to run some tests before reconfiguring its DNS settings. The results – using Google’s own Namebench tool – were surprising.

Net Neutrality is Now Deader than Dead

Net Neutrality is Now Deader than Dead

By Jeff Nolan on April 6, 2010

Comcast won a major legal case it filed against the FCC regarding Comcast’s attempt to throttle BitTorrent traffic on their network. The FCC fined Comcast on the grounds that it violated their net neutrality policy, and Comcast took them to court arguing that not only were they wrong to regulate internet data on the grounds [...]

FCC admits CableCARD a failure

FCC admits CableCARD a failure

By Jeff Nolan on December 4, 2009

Yep, total failure. There is no real 3rd party marketplace for CableCARDs and what the network operators provide is limited in functionality while costing the same as a set top box (e.g. Comcrap’s CableCARD doesn’t support on demand). On top of everything else, the signal processing capabilities in the CableCARDs was suspect, in my own [...]

Comcast Data Usage Meter: What’s to Celebrate About Being a Year Late?

Comcast Data Usage Meter: What’s to Celebrate About Being a Year Late?

By Zoli Erdos on December 1, 2009

I admit I’m baffled.  If a major service provider imposes consumption caps without providing a way to measure consumption, then promises a metering tool and fails to deliver for a year, than what exactly is the reason to celebrate when finally they start limited testing a year late? But that’s exactly what’s happening: Comcast keeps [...]

Predictions for 2010: Chris Selland’s List

Predictions for 2010: Chris Selland’s List

By Chris Selland on December 1, 2009

I’ll admit it – I love ‘holiday prediction’ time.  It gives us all a chance to reflect on the year past and think about what’s going to happen in the year ahead. 2009 has been a tough year although we do seem (despite the Dubai woes which are literally taking place as I write this…) [...]

Towards a Permission-based Web. Wherefore Net Neutrality? Or: Maybe Open Source Wins After All

Towards a Permission-based Web. Wherefore Net Neutrality? Or: Maybe Open Source Wins After All

By James Governor on October 30, 2009

As we rush to purchase Apple products and services on Cupertino’s monochrome treadmill of shiny shiny I can’t help thinking the open web community is losing something vital - a commitment to net neutrality and platform openness.
If a single company can decide what plays on the network and what does not, in arbitrary fashion, how can that be [...]
