EMC Jumps Into ADBMS Appliance Game

EMC Jumps Into ADBMS Appliance Game

By Merv Adrian on November 4, 2010

The Data Computing Appliance, first deliverable from EMC’s acquisition of Greenplum, was announced last month, only 75 days after the acquisition closed, and it doesn’t lack for ambition.  Pat Gelsinger, EMC CEO, pointed to the high level opportunity: unlocking the “hidden value” of enormous and growing data assets every company is increasingly holding, and often [...]

Symantec need to stop hiding their Green light under a bushel

Symantec need to stop hiding their Green light under a bushel

By Tom Raftery on October 6, 2010

I attended Symantec’s Vision 2010 event in Barcelona yesterday and I found it to be hugely frustrating! Symantec are one of the world’s largest computer security companies with 31,000 customers, 18,400 employees (PDF), and revenue in 2009 of $6.2 billion. At yesterday’s Vision event however, they missed lots of great opportunities to talk up their [...]

Research Report: The Upcoming Battle For The Largest Share Of The Technology Budget (Part 1)

By R "Ray" Wang on July 27, 2010

Is your technology provider a hardware vendor or a software vendor? Does your System Integrator now provide solutions in the cloud? These questions will continue as models converge. Hardware, software, and system integration vendors must reinvent new models of revenue. The economic recession has forced business model shifts at the major technology companies.

Symantec’s Sustainability Story: It’s The Power Consumption, Stupid.

Symantec’s Sustainability Story: It’s The Power Consumption, Stupid.

By Tom Raftery on July 23, 2010

I was lucky enough recently to meet Jose Iglesias, the guy spearheading Symantec’s sustainability efforts. I wrote the interview up over on Monkchips, but much of the content belongs here too. I like Symantec’s clear focus on energy. While others are broadening their sustainability story, Symantec is doubling down on managing energy more effectively, with [...]

Oracle Exadata: Early Signs Promising

Oracle Exadata: Early Signs Promising

By Merv Adrian on June 15, 2010

Exadata is looking good. In the past few months, I’ve had the chance to talk to several early adopters of Oracle Exadata V2, some in connection with a sponsored white paper Oracle has just published. It’s still early, but I see this product as a milestone, regardless of its commercial success. That is still to [...]
