I love Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends report. This year though it struck me that over 95% of her 355 slides focused on consumer world – digital advertising, ecommerce, ride-sharing, gaming. wearables and digital healthcare etc. The “vertical” growth in the report over the last few years has been a focus on China and India’s booming consumer markets.
There is a bit on cloud computing in the enterprise, but hardly anything on the Industrial Internet (IoT), automation in the workplace etc.
That confirms the consumerization trend in IT – one slide in particular, that of changing designer to developer ratios shows it powerfully.
But it also suggests enterprise vendors are riding the coat tails of UX, data center and algorithmic investments at Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and other consumer focused tech companies.
In the not so distant past, innovations in government and corporate tech would gradually make their way to consumers. Not any more. Not by a long shot. It’s the other way around as Mary and her VC colleagues see it.
